Language Delay/ Disorders

Language skills are divided into two main areas: Receptive Language and Expressive Language. Receptive language refers to your child’s ability to follow instructions, understand stories and comprehend oral and written form of language. Expressive language refers to your child’s ability to express their thoughts and feelings, narrating stories and interacting with his family and friends.

Language disorders affect your child’s ability to understand what is being said to them and/or their ability to express their thoughts and feelings.  Therefore, this has a direct implication on their ability to interact at home, school or in social environments.

Language disorders affects the child’s expressive abilities such as answering simple questions, maintaining meaningful conversations, narrating stories or vocabulary growth. It also affects their ability to convey their basic needs and follow simple instructions in day-to-day life, which has a severe impact on how they learn and interact with their peer group which affects their social and emotional wellbeing.
