SPEECH SOUND DISORDERS (Articulation, Phonology, CAS)

Speech Sound Disorders (Articulation, Phonology, CAS)

Speech development or production of sounds mostly occurs during the early stages of life (birth to 5 years of age). As the child starts hearing different speech sounds, they try to imitate the same while babbling or using first words and develop their own speech sound repertoire. Research suggests that children should have acquired most of the speech sounds by 6 – 7 years of age.

Unintelligible or unclear speech is very common in younger children as they are still learning the precise placement for all the sounds. According to research, speech of a 2-year-old is understood by strangers 50% of the time while speech of a 4-year-old is understood 90 – 100% of the time.

Speech sounds disorders are not very uncommon. Children from 3 years and above might have difficulty producing few or all the speech sounds. Depending on the type of errors and difficulty in motor movement which a child uses, they might have articulation disorder, phonological disorder or apraxia of speech.
