WHAT TO EXPECT

What To Expect

Before the initial consultation

Before the initial assessment session, you will be sent a client information pack relative to basic case history about your child. This helps the SLP understand the concerns of your child and plan for the assessment session. You will also be asked to attach any previous assessments or reports from other professionals such as previous SLP, OT, paediatrician, or psychologists. Once all your documents are in place, appointment will be confirmed via email or SMS. You will receive a confirmation SMS 24 hrs prior to the appointment.

Initial consultation

Initial consultation will take place at your home and is scheduled for 60 mins. SLP will take detail case history (developmental and medical history) from the parents or caregiver and will also observe the child interacting with parents or caregiver. This helps SLP to understand child’s strengths and areas of concern. Depending on the child’s age, case history and your concerns about your child’s communication difficulties, SLP might carry out any one or two of the following assessments –

  • Informal observation
  • Play based assessment
  • Formal assessment

Depending on what type of assessment is carried out, number of sessions required for assessment and pricing will vary. This will be discussed with parents in detail.

Subsequent assessment session

SLP will carry out the assessment as discussed in the initial consultation. Few standardised assessments are completed within one session, but others require more than one session to be administered. A follow-up session will be booked within a week to complete the assessment, if required.

Once the assessment is completed, SLP will provide feedback about your child’s performance. However, the analysis of the test result takes a few days and might not be available for a week or two. SLP will complete the analysis and the results will be discussed with you in the next appointment. Intervention plan will be formulated after discussing with you and taking into consideration your child’s strengths and concerns.

Therapy session

All the therapy sessions are provided in the comfort of your home, which is the most natural and comfortable environment for your child. Therapy session will run for about 45 mins and will include 5 mins of discussion about the activities carried out in the session and your child’s progress.

Intervention plan discussed in the assessment session will be referred for all the therapy activities, which will be reviewed every 6 months.

Parent Involvement

We, at Resonance Speech Therapy, believe that parents are the most important people in the child’s communication journey. Being the best facilitators and expert of their own child, we want parents to actively participate in the assessment and therapy sessions. Parents will be encouraged to carry out a few activities in front of SLP to ensure that appropriate technique are being followed while communicating with the child.
